Release type is generally based on the number of tracks and total duration. That being said, stores and services ultimately determine how a release displays on their platform based on their own guidelines.
Album
A release is generally considered an album when it has:
- 7 or more tracks or
- Total duration of 30 minutes or more
EP (Extended Play)
Stores and services consider a release to be an EP when it has:
- 4-6 tracks with a total duration of 30 minutes or less, or
- 1-3 tracks where at least one track is 10 minutes or longer, still keeping the total duration under 30 minutes
Single
A single usually has:
- 1-3 tracks, with each track being less than 10 minutes in length
Compilation
Compilation definitions can vary between services, but a release is likely to be categorized as a compilation if it meets any of the following:
- Features four or more primary artists at the album level
- 50% or more of the tracks have been previously released
- Includes multiple tracks released over an 18-month period
